The Edge

AirAsia Bhd group chief executive officer Datuk Tony Fernandes has been named "Malaysia's Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2006", for his efforts in revolutionising the air travel industry in the region.

He received the award from Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak at a ceremony held in Kuala Lumpur on Dec 18. He was chosen from a selection of 16 outstanding entrepreneurs, all leading captains of industry.

Fernandes also won the "Master Entrepreneur of the Year" award.
He started his career with Virgin Group before joining Warner Music International London. He was transferred back to Malaysia at the age of 27 to head Warner Music Malaysia. He spent 12 years with Warner Music Malaysia, with his last position being the Asean vice president.

In December 2001, he formed AirAsia, Asia's first low-cost carrier, together with his three partners. In just five years, the airline had formed two successful joint ventures in Thailand and Indonesia, expanded its fleet from two to 46, and now flies to over 40 destinations in Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Macau, China, the Philippines, Brunei, Cambodia and Vietnam.

Ernst & Young in a statement said AirAsia was the first airline in the world to introduce SMS booking. It also introduced ticket-less travelling. Since its inception, AirAsia has recorded profits annually despite increasing fuel costs. It had carried over 23 million passengers in less than five years.

Being named the Entrepreneur of the Year, Fernandes will represent Malaysia at the world award event at Monte Carlo in May 2007, Ernst & Young said.

More than 40 of the best entrepreneurs from around the world would compete for the 7th Ernst & Young World Entrepreneur of the Year Award, which has become a global benchmark of entrepreneurial excellence.

Meanwhile, Kenny Goh Chee Ken and Henry Goh Chee Heng of Macro Kiosk Bhd were named the "Emerging Entrepreneurs of the Year" for their success in servicing over 1,000 content providers worldwide using the SMS Gateway technology.

Simon Loh Wee Hian of e-pay (M) Sdn Bhd was named the "Technology Entrepreneur of the Year", for providing reliable, secured and flexible electronic prepaid solutions to service providers and creating business opportunities to retailers.

In the Woman Entrepreneur of the Year category, NR Architect's Nafisah Radin won the award, for her various accomplishments in the male-dominated architectural and interior design industry.

"We take great pride in the role we have played and will continue to play in celebrating the story of how many hard-won dreams have come true. It was indeed a challenge for the judges to select the award recipients, as each top nominee is a winner in his or her own right," Ernst & Young Malaysia country managing partner See Huey Beng said.
